Mountain Dodgers 9, Mountain Angels 8

Game writeup submitted by League Office

The determined Dodgers battled back from a 7-0 third inning deficit to beat the tough and previously undefeated Angels 9-8 to win the first ever Tucson MSBL 40+ Mountain Division Championship in an exciting back and forth match up. The Old Men of Summer dug a hole deep and wide early, commiting 5 errors and giving up 7 unearned runs. Before the Angels could cover them up though, the Big Blue responded, scoring a run in the fourth, 5 in the fifth, and 1 in the 6th to tie the game.

That got starter Rene Hernandez off the hook. Rene pitched well (as he has all season long) but the shakey Dodger defense forced him to give way to Tom Marassa in the fourth. Tom came in and held the hot hitting Angels to 1 unearned run over 6 innings. This gave the never say die Dodgers the chance to peck away at the Halo lead. However, the Angels ran the score to 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the eighth, Greg Flynn stroked a two out single up the middle, allowing Fernando Lopez to score the tying run from second. The Dodgers were fortunate as Lopez was probably the only Dodger that could score from second without the assistance of some type of electronic mobile device.

In the ninth, Arnold Mares turned an inside the park home run into a triple and then scored on a one out single by Johnny Hernandez who had 3 hits on the evening. That gave the Dodgers a 9-8 lead, their first of the evening. In the bottom of the ninth, Marassa stayed tough, getting a fly out, a ground out back to the box, and a pop to second, sandwiched around a walk to Manny Carreon who had tortured the Dodgers all night.

Tom Marassa was undoubtedly the Dodger MVP in this great team win. Not only did he pitch 6 strong innings of 6 hit, 3 strikeout ball, he had 3 hits at the plate filling in the three spot for Jose Pico, the leading Dodger hitter who was out with a hammie. Fernando Lopez was also key for the Blue, getting 3 hits and a couple of RBIs, along with scoring the tying run in the eighth. Newly elected Tucson MSBL Hall of Fame Member Ernesto Escala also picked up two tough hits against Dan Desgagne, who dominated the Dodgers most of the evening, striking out 11.

Don Holp, another MSBL HOFer, had a key extra base hit for the champs in the 6th and ended up knotting the score at 7. Every other Dodger (Lou Russo, Gaspar Limon, Dave Carranza, Joe Jimenez, Rene Hernandez) either had a key hit or a great defensive play in helping the team battle back to take the crown in the Mountain Division.

The Dodgers would like to congratulate the Angels on a great game. A number of us have been waxed by many of the guys on their team in other past championships, so we appreciate how strong their team has been all year. They were great sports as well, inviting us to have a drink in the parking lot after the game, but most of us had to get back to our assisted living facility before curfew!

For all the Mountain Division teams, we would like to thank Dave Reynolds for putting the division together. The first year is always the toughest, but this division will only get bigger and better from here. We would also like to thank the Tucson MSBL for supporting Dave.

Finally, Greg Flynn has offered free HDTVs, compliments of Circuit City, to all his Dodger teammates, so we expect to be lining up Saturday morning to take him up on the offer.

Congratulations to the 2008 Tucson MSBL Mountain Division Champion Dodgers!!

Game writeup submitted by National Giants

This was one the of the best pitching duels of the season. Brian Pemble vs Tom Marasa. Final Score 3-2. Both pitchers threw a complete game. Brian Pemble picked up his 4th win. Pemble also recorded 10 strikeouts. That gives Pemble 103 strikeouts for the year. The game came down to moving runners over. The winning run was scored in the 7th. Higuera lead off the inning by singling. Stephen Beech pinch ran. A sacrifice bunt by Woody Woodworth. Jerry Hendricks singled to put runners on first and third and one out. Stevie Rodriguez going down early on the count 0-2. Ripped a deep sacrifice fly ball to leftfield to score Beech. Both teams battled the whole game. Indians took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Mark Stevens singled in a run after Higgins walked and was sacrificed to second. The Giants scored two runs in the top of the 4th inning. Josh Chlopowicz with one out hustled down to first to get an infield hit. With two out Garigan hit a chopper that bounced over the second baseman's head and hustled his way into second base. Nate Mejia followed with a two run single. Giants lead 2-1 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. The Indians tied it on a Mark Stevens two out single. Stevens single would have scored two if not for the one hop perfect throw by Eric Garigan to the catcher Chlopowicz. Gunned him down just like TV. Pemble was on his game and shutout the Indians the final four innings. Not without any scares though. In the bottom of the 9th, with two outs and a runner at second base. The batter struckout, but the ball was impossible to catch. The catcher ran after the ball and threw it wildly to first, but fundamentally sound Brent Banholzer backed up the play and held the runner at third base. Saved the game. With runners on first and third Pemble struckout the last hitter to secure the victory. By the way Mark Stevens, nice move using your one intentional walk per game to put Mejia on first to load the bases. Tommy, I tip my hat to you. You got me this time. Nice pitch to get me to hit a weak semi-line drive double play ball. Woody, nice game at third base and laying down that sacrifice bunt that lead to scoring the winning run. The Giants pull to within one game of the final playoff spot. Giants are adding Barry Bonds to the team since no one else wants him.

Giants and White Sox play another great game. The lead going back and forth the first 4 innings was found to be tied in the 5th. It stayed that way until the top of the 7th. With 2 outs for the White Sox they found the top of the order coming up. T. Lawerance with another great game (3 for 4, 4-Runs, 2-SB) gets on base on what would have been a close play at first but turned out to be a wild throw that ensured the go ahead run got on and the 3rd out eluded. Then Jr Roman stepped to the plate and hit a rocket of a hit to dead center field (would have been out anywhere else in the ball bark but for the green center feild monster at Kino). The hit end up as a triple and the go ahead run that the White Sox needed to end the game. JR Roman goes 1 for 1 (3B), 3 Runs, 2-RBI, SB, 2-BB, SAC. D. Young goes 2 for 3 (1B,2B), 3-RBI, BB.
